Role: Manager of Social Work
How long have you worked for Barwon Health? 20 years
I was attracted to working at Barwon Health because of the opportunity to live in a beautiful part of Victoria and have a short commute to work. The diverse career opportunities available at Barwon Health also appealed to me. My career journey at Barwon Health started in the cancer services team where I worked for approximately 12 years. I then transitioned to a project role where I helped local cancer support groups get established. After that, I returned to social work and later took on a secondment as the manager of our volunteer program. In this role, I also established a consumer engagement strategy. Currently, I am the manager of social work and have led Barwon Health’s work in the Strengthening health service response to family violence. Barwon Health has supported my career development in many ways, including providing external and internal professional development opportunities and good supervision. One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that the day-to-day work is never boring. I feel like I am making a difference by supporting my colleagues in their work, which then benefits the health of our community. Working at Barwon Health is different from other healthcare services because we are the only public health service in our region, offering full care from birth to death. Our families and friends also use our service, so it feels like we are all part of caring for our community.

Role: Social Worker at Inpatient Rehabilitation Centre (IRC)
How long have you worked for Barwon Health? 20 years
I was attracted to working at Barwon Health because of the opportunity to work in various areas of social work and to continue developing my skills as a social worker. My career journey to date at Barwon Health has been quite diverse. I started at the McKellar Centre in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Centre for around eight years, working in different units like orthopaedic, nuero stroke, palliative care, and geriatric evaluation and management (GEM). Then, I shifted to community social work, working at Belmont Community Rehabilitation Centre and the home based unit. Later, I joined University Hospital Geelong, where I worked on several wards, mainly in the general medical wards. Currently, I am back at McKellar, in a senior social work role working in the GEM unit.
Barwon Health has supported my career development by providing peer support and encouragement to continue developing my skills. What I enjoy the most about my role is meeting many people and supporting their journey from the sub-acute to discharging home. Working at Barwon Health is unique because it provides a broad range of services to assist people in their entire lifespan, from birth to death.
