International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates (IMG’s) are a vital part of the Australian and Barwon Health medical workforce.
At Barwon Health our goal is to support the transition to practising medicine in a new country, new healthcare system, new culture, and perhaps even a new language!
During the year and especially during the COVID pandemic we have many workforce shortages, which gives us the opportunity to employ IMGs.

Barwon Health IMG Program
Barwon Health offers a recognised International Medical Graduate (IMG) program supporting the commencement of your Australian Medical Career. We offer a two-week fully paid buddy orientation program welcoming you to our health service. Core learning provided to you in the first week encompasses an introduction to the Australian Health Care system and an opportunity to familiarise yourself with our leading health service. Week two includes fully supervised shadowing on the ward with support from the stellar Medical Education and Training team. We have weekly IMG tutorials alongside frequent check in’s with your supervisor.
We offer:
- Visa sponsorship for yourself, partner and dependents
- AHPRA Registration assistance
- Accommodation and moving to the region support
UK, Irish, Canadian and other IMG’s on the competent Authority Pathway
You can apply at any time for our Hospital Medical Officer roles at Barwon Health. Our main intakes are in February and August, but we are happy to discuss other times of the year as well.

Meet Aaranie, an International Medical Graduate and aspiring Rural GP
“As an international medical graduate, Barwon Health was my first choice to commence my career as a medical doctor in Australia.
I was looking for an organisation with a diverse population and welcoming culture where I am respected for my morals, values and beliefs which I found here.
Working at Barwon Health gave me the chance to experience a wide breadth of rotations including ED, Geriatric Evaluation Medicine, General Surgery, a rural rotation at Colac Area Health, O&G, Neuro Trauma Rehabilitation and Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit. This has ultimately led me to confidently choose a career as a rural General Practitioner.
I am also grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion for Women’s Health and complete a Diploma in Obstetrics.
Throughout my time at Barwon Health, it has been a highlight to serve the community by being a member of a health organisation that prioritises high-quality patient care, education and research in order to advance health and wellbeing for all.”
