Careers in Residential Aged Care

“Now is a great time to join public healthcare and work within the aged care setting. Australia’s population is ageing rapidly and our current agedAngela Erwin Web 1127173 care system needs to change to keep up with future demand. The aged care reforms enable generational change and put senior Australians and their individual needs first. Barwon Health values high-quality healthcare and we are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for our residents.

Nurses are integral to the delivery of high-quality health care and we value your skills and empathy. If you are passionate about helping people, working in aged care is your chance to make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

The rewards and job satisfaction you receive from helping one of Australia’s most vulnerable populations makes aged care a perfect career.”

"I have been at Barwon Health since 2020, after originally being employed as the Wallace Lodge facility manager. Prior to Barwon Health, I had been working in residential aged care for over 20 years in most aged care roles. I started in aged care as an enrolled nurse trainee, progressed to registered nurse and then went into management, where I’ve been for around 12 years.
The most rewarding part of my role is being able to work with the aged care teams to provide quality service to aged care residents and clients. Making a difference in people’s everyday life is important to me.
Aged care workers are essential in supporting older people in their care and quality of life. Aged care workers assist older people to make their own decisions about their care and advocate for older within Barwon Health. It is important to recognise aged care workers on Aged Care Employee Day as valued members of the organisation. We want to celebrate aged care workers as having a specialised area of knowledge and expertise, with skills and a passion for ensuring older people are supported to partner in their care to optimise their quality of life.
Aged care workers contribute to the positive sense of community and culture at Barwon Health. Everyone is focused on providing the best care for each member of the community, which is inspiring.”

Ana Hourihan – Acting Facility Manager, Alan David Lodge

“When the opportunity presented itself for a position in Wallace Lodge Garden, I was certain that Barwon Health would be able to offer me what I was looking for – career progression and work-life balance.IMG_0165.093700.jpg

Being part of the public sector I knew there would be lots of support provided to both employees and residents/patients and jumped at the chance. Since being employed 12 months ago as the Acting Nurse Unit Manager in Wallace Lodge Garden, I was formally appointed to the role earlier in the year, seconded to the Safety and Quality Coordinator for Aged Care for five months and have now returned to Wallace Lodge as the Acting Facility Manager – quite the whirlwind however, I believe my journey emphasises the endless opportunities Barwon Health offers.

Working as a nurse in Aged Care gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing that I have made a difference in my resident’s lives. Barwon Health has a supportive and caring culture that allows you to be able to look after residents in the best way possible. There is a real sense of teamwork amongst the staff and a common objective which is to make a real difference in the residents' lives.”
