Memory Clinic – Cognitive, Dementia and Memory Service

Early diagnosis of changes to memory, thinking, communication and behaviour is important to determine the right treatment for you and to plan for the future. It provides people with a timely opportunity to learn about their condition, understand changes as they occur and to cope with day to day issues of living with memory loss.

What is the Memory Clinic?

The Memory Clinic is a specialist assessment service that can help you, your family and your GP understand why you may be experiencing progressive memory loss or changes to your thinking (cognition), language skills, or behaviour. The Memory Clinic does not provide ongoing treatment but does provide:

  • Expert clinical diagnosis
  • Information on treatment options
  • Education about brain health
  • Help in planning for the future
  • Support for carers
  • Strategies to support memory or thinking difficulties
  • Referrals to other organisations for ongoing support

What is involved in a Memory Clinic Assessment?

Your assessment will involve several appointments. At your first appointment, you will meet with two members of our multidisciplinary team at McKellar Centre and they will commence a detailed initial assessment.  Where appropriate, other expert assessments may also be offered e.g. neuropsychology. The team use a range of tests along with detailed conversations with you and your loved ones to build up a complete picture of what may be the cause of changes to your memory and thinking. Our multidisciplinary team members include geriatricians, neuropsychologists, speech pathologist, occupational therapist and registered nursing.

A final meeting is arranged for you and your family to discuss your care plan, assessment outcomes, diagnosis and recommendations.  This information is also given to you in writing and we send our assessment information to your GP and specialists with your consent.
