MIDWIFERY CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION
Barwon Health offers numerous education sessions tailored to women and their partners to help prepare them for labour, childbirth and early parenting. These sessions cover varying topics and are outlined below:
- Normal labour & birth
- Strategies for labour
- Induction & unexpected outcomes
- Pain relief options
- Breastfeeding
- Early parenting
- Settling your newborn
- Brief overview of the most common postnatal health concerns.
There is no cost to attend childbirth education classes from 1 November 2022 (including physiotherapy antenatal education session).

BREASTFEEDING EDUCATION
Conducted by experienced lactation consultants over one two-hour session, this class is specifically designed for women who:
- Have had previous breastfeeding problems
- Have had previous breast surgery
- Have limited access to midwives due to receiving care through high-risk clinics
- Have an elevated Body Mass Index.
Please note: A breastfeeding class is included in the Child Birth Education series for first-time mothers.

- Baby-friendly hospital
- Skin to skin contact
- How breastfeeding works
- The importance of a proper latch
- How to know your baby is getting enough breast milk
- What to do if my baby is crying
- What to do and who to contact if problems do occur.
- Conducted around one month prior to your due date

PHYSIOTHERAPY ANTENATAL EDUCATION
Barwon Health physiotherapy offers physiotherapy antenatal education sessions for women during pregnancy. The information covered in the education sessions is also available in other locations on this website. Please click each hyperlink to access this.
The antenatal physiotherapy sessions are a one off session and cover the following topics:
- How and why to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy and after birth
- How to take care of your bladder and bowel
- How to help your aches and pains in pregnancy and after birth
- Safe exercise in pregnancy and after birth
- Postnatal recovery
