Reducing Perineal Tears: PROTECT Project
Barwon Health's Maternity Services are working with Safer Care Victoria’s Better Births for Women Collaborative to improve birth outcomes for all women by reducing the instances of severe perineal tears during birth.
As part of our practice we will offer birthing mothers the following during your labour:
- A warm compress applied to your perineum when your baby’s head is starting to show. This will help the muscles to stretch.
- Help with breathing techniques to have a slow, controlled birth.
- We will gently support your perineum with our hands during the birth of your baby’s head.
For more information about this project, please speak to a midwife or doctor at your next appointment.
