Radiation Oncology - Bill Patterson

Background

I completed my MSc App Physics at RMIT in 1991 whilst working at PMCI where I had started in 1978.

In 1991, I relocated to Geelong Hospital as Chief Physicist to set up the physics department of the newly constructed ALCC.  In 1995, I left the ALCC to work in private practice as Chief Physicist at what was to become Radiation Oncology Victoria and later Genesis Health Care.

In 2013, after 18 years and having travelled over 1 million kilometres I returned to the ALCC, which is 15 minutes from home, as Principal Physicist.

I am also an examiner for the ACPSEM which is the medical physics professional body in Australasia.

Research Focus

I am currently involved in 3 research projects. The first is utilizing nanoparticles in conjunction with photodynamic therapy to enhance tumour cell kill in radiotherapy. This work is undertaken in conjunction with RMIT University, University of South Australia and Deakin University. It is hoped that the use of the nanoparticles will result in increased tumour control without increasing the side effects from the radiotherapy.

The second project is using data mining and artificial intelligence to individualize oncology patient treatment techniques.

This work is undertaken as part of the OzCAT group which includes many hospitals, both nationally and internationally including University of NSW.

The third research investigation is to utilize data mining techniques to determine the most appropriate technique for an individual patient rather than simply a class solution which may not be the optimum in all cases.
