Palliative Care - Matt Ely

Background

After graduating as a physiotherapist in 2003 I have worked in variety of fields including acute, community and rehab in Australia and the UK. In 2014, I stared working in Palliative Care and the Cachexia and nutritional support service. The Barwon Health Cachexia and Nutrition Support Service (CNSS) was established to maximise nutrition, function and quality of life (QOL) for people living with cancer cachexia. The CNSS consists of a multidisciplinary team including a Nurse Practitioner, Physiotherapist, Dietitian and Palliative Medicine Physician.

Research Focus

My research focused to date has been on cancer cachexia. Cancer cachexia is a complex multifactorial syndrome defined by loss of muscle and fat mass that cannot be fully reversed by conventional nutritional support and leads to progressive functional impairment.

Additionally I have also been working with the other researchers in the Palliative care team to explore the use of telehealth for palliative care patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
