Working as a Nurse Practitioner

Thursday, 27 July 2023

Nurse practitioners at Barwon Health can directly impact a patient's journey when they enter an emergency or urgent care centre at a time of need. With the opportunity to work in both the Emergency Department and the Urgent Care Centre (UCC), nurse practitioners play a pivotal role in delivering best practice, high-quality patient-centred care to the local community in Victoria.

Barwon Health is a leading regional health service in Victoria, catering annually to approximately 80,000 emergency and 11,000 urgent care presentations. The organisation's Emergency Department is equipped with an adult and paediatric short stay unit, ensuring that consumers receive the right care, at the right place, and at the right time. In addition, Barwon Health North's UCC offers walk-in services for individuals with minor illnesses and injuries requiring immediate attention. The UCC boasts a skilled clinical team comprising of nurse practitioners, registered nurses and physiotherapists.

Empowering the Future of Healthcare

Tara Kimberley – Acting nurse unit manager at Barwon Health’s UCC, speaks enthusiastically about the invaluable contribution of nurse practitioners in the organisation: “Nurse practitioners bring a level of expertise and patient-centred care that elevates our healthcare services to new heights. They play an essential role in bridging the gap between traditional nursing and medical care, ensuring patients receive comprehensive and holistic treatment. Every day is different. Each site, be it the ED or UCC, comes with the opportunity for the nurse practitioners to provide timely and quality care, whilst developing their practice in a supportive environment. The synergy between the multidisciplinary teams is remarkable. Nurse practitioners bring unique skills and perspectives to the table, resulting in better patient outcomes and a supportive work environment.”

Beyond the Boundaries of Traditional Care

The role of a nurse practitioner is far from ordinary. With advanced training and education at the Master's level, nurse practitioners go beyond the boundaries of traditional nursing care. They possess the authority to diagnose and treat patients independently, empowering them to act swiftly during emergencies. They have the opportunity to make a real difference in patients because they can make direct referrals for specialised tests, prescribe medications, and provide follow-up care. This level of autonomy is truly empowering.

Join the Journey

Barwon Health chief nursing officer Ange Erwin invites passionate and skilled nurses to join their team of nurse practitioners and embark on a journey of empowerment and growth: “We are committed to supporting nurses at every step of their career. Becoming a nurse practitioner is not just a job; it's a fulfilling and dynamic profession that enables nurses to make a lasting impact on patients and communities.”

Emergency Services director Dr Belinda Hibble is excited to welcome additional passionate nurse practitioners across emergency services to join her team: “This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of advancements in patient care and shape the future of healthcare. Don't miss the chance to make a meaningful impact and further your career in a dynamic and rewarding setting.”
